The Training (Competency Development) Program

Apprentices seeking one of the above national qualifications will be required to undergo an industry recommended training program or course of study that involves learning and assessment activities.

The related learning and activities are formally documented in an agreement and involve:

  • the employer, including Group Training Companies, where used
  • the employee Ð Apprentice
  • the Registered Training Organisation (RTO), e.g. TAFE institutions, universities with TAFE sectors, Skills Centres and similar enterprises that have registered to deliver vocational training for the given qualification in the National Electrotechnology Training Package.

On being confirmed competent through successful completion of the industry approved training program/course of study, an RTO will issue the apprentice a national qualification.

Common attributes required by employers of prospective apprentices are:

  • Any person aged 15 years or more can apply for an Apprenticeship.
  • Most employers require applicants who have completed at least Year 10 of a secondary school education program and have a sound base in high level mathematics.
  • Employers also prefer applicants who have successfully completed Years 11 or 12 of a secondary school education program or a Post Secondary Education Pre-employment Course and have a sound base in high level mathematics.

What are employers looking for?

Employers are looking for the following personal attributes:

  • effective high level numeracy and literacy skills
  • effective communications skills
  • acceptable presentation
  • punctuality
  • a positive attitude
  • interest in the industry as a career
  • ability to work at heights or in confined spaces around moving machinery
  • ability to distinguish between colours is an advantage
